Have you got a pen?
Yes, I’ve got a pen.
No, I haven’t got a pen.

Do you have a pen?
Yes, I have a pen.
No, I don’t have a pen.

Question: What is the difference between these two questions and their answers?

Answer: Nothing!  They are the same.  However, the first one is more common in British English and the second more common in US English.

Remember: It is very common for students to answer by saying “I haven’t a pen.”  Technically, there’s nothing wrong with this but it doesn’t sound very natural; it’s neither one thing nor the other!

Here are some other examples of British vs. American English: -

I’ve already done it. / I already did it.
I work Monday to Friday. / I work Monday through Friday.
He did Biology at Cambridge . / He majored in Biology at Harvard.
