Due to his success in the Formula Atlantic Championship and the Grand Prix of Trois Riveries, Gilles Villeneuve received further support from Ecurie Canada and Direct Film (that will fully sponsored Gilles for the 1977 season). Even though he had to race in Formula 1 (including the British, Canadian and Japanese rounds) and Can-Am, he still raced in the Formula Atlantic Championship of Canada to reign his title.
After four fruitless Formula Atlantic races in South Africa, (in which he drove a Chevron) he turned back to Canada to reign the title, but it's not easy. Many new and strong rivals entered into the Championship, such as Price Cobb, Bobby Rahal and Keke Rosberg (the F1 World Champion in 1982). He had to try all his best and mostly finished in 1st 3 places.
At the end of the 1977 season, Gilles Villeneuve had 114 points and reign the Champion of Formula Atlantic Canada. On the other hand, Gilles Villeneuve was already employed by Ferrari and started his prestigous career in Formula 1.
