The long summer vacation is winding to a close. What have I been doing in the past two months? Aside from a short teaching enhancement course and the pilgrim tour in Korea, I have spent most of my time reading the ‘South China Morning Post’. Though a regular subscriber, I cannot do much reading on school days because of the tight work schedule. The most I can manage is one or two news articles and some opinion pieces by famous commentators. The purpose of the reading is mainly to keep myself adequately informed and to select current issues for my students to discuss in their Oral English class and to comment on as their weekly writing assignment. Thus targeted, the reading is lacking in depth and far from pleasurable.
During the holiday, however, I can read to my heart’s content. My favourite is the opinion page, ‘Leaders and Letters’. The editorial gives a clear picture of and comments on an issue of public concern. The column ‘Insight’ finds famous columnists putting forth their arguments about much-talked about topics. There are other voices in response to comments or giving their own. All in all, the page is a forum where different points of view are laid open to readers’ appreciation or criticism.
Aimed to impress the readers, the letters and articles are usually credited with the brevity and preciseness so often lacking in an ordinary kind of article. The use of exquisite language skills required of journalism makes the articles inviting and persuasive. Letters to the editor also draw attention to varied viewpoints about controversial topics.
Indeed, I am fascinated so much by this way of voicing one’s opinion that I have even submitted several letters to the editor, expressing my viewpoint about two issues, namely, ‘Pseudo-models at the Hong Kong Book Fair’ and ‘What I think about the drug-testing scheme’. To my great delight, both letters were published, one in the Internet Forum and the other on the main opinion page. The joy I felt was no less than a student’s when his work is accepted by the teacher.
I admire the columnists’ brilliant writing skills. I regret my inability to spend time developing these skills. But these excellent writers will always be my models reminding me of the need to keep trying to improve my own writing even though I will never be able to achieve their high standards.
The holiday having drawn to an end, I will once again be buried in work up to my neck. But I will still try to squeeze time for reading and writing and, above all, to learn from great writers and commentators.

I feel the same way, too. It seems only yesterday that the holiday started!

Before retiring to bed last night, I solemnly made a promise - I'll definitely give myself a chance to read some good works in literature after this extended paper I'm writing. All these years I've been burying my mind in heaps of analyses, and regrettably, been paying a deaf ear to my heart's yearning for some literary food for thought. Hope this hasn't done too much damage to the soul!

It's good you can soon rid yourself of the deadening drudgery of analytical and judgmental reading. I hope you will find time to enjoy books of literary value instead of being weighed down with new commitments.

Christ-Follower: You'd probably been wondering if I had turned arrogant or imprudent of late (for having left one or two of your messages deposited @ my blog unresponded to). Fact was: I've been plagued by some strange phenonmenon. I have no clue if it's with my computer or the Yahoo Blog itself. It seemed to only happen when I typed in responses to you and one or two others within the Yahoo Blog environment. The system suddenly and completely shut down on its accord, and refused to be turned on again until after a couple of minutes. Highly frustrating isn't it?
I'm not a subscriber to SCMP's net-edition, but have access to the day's paper when I exercise @ gymn on Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Since I knew you contributed to "Talkback", I made a point of thumbing quickly to "C2" ... ; hence my recent familiarity with public opinions on irresponsible smokers ... drug-rehab school reprovisioning ... new MTR line ... , etc. Now that your regular routine has to be resumed, my search for your views in the columns would perhaps be in vain ...
May I wish you a smooth start @ the new term

Hi, HubbyWhite. You are the last person I would find arrogant and imprudent. The loving husband, father and grandpa I've often seen in you is more than enough counter-evidence to such a description. Your lack of response did strike me as unusual initially, considering your usual friendliness. But I soon decided that it must have been some kind of engagement that led to your long silence (you've not been blogging since the post about the pseudo-models).
I haven't submitted any letter to the SCMP of late as I do not find the recent arguments motivating. Now that school reopening is imminent, I’ll be writing less still. But I’ll still be reading to learn from good writers. If my memory doesn’t fail me, you used to be working in the field of journalism, too, hence your excellent bilingual skills. You’re thus one of those I learn from.

I could actually feel your joy seeing your letters published. There's always a writer inside us, right?
Yeah, a new semester is beginning. Have a great semester.

'There's always a writer inside us.' Well said! Even a child has a natural urge to scribble. But the writing ability is not a gift. The skill of communicating well with the written word needs to be developed.
Yes, school reopens on 1st September and I've geared up for the new semester. Thank you.
