Chapter 1

Drip, Drop, Drip, Drop, Drip…

Arggghhhh!!!!” Fiona wailed. She had given up trying to ignore the annoying sounds of her family’s leaking tap, and now she is lying on her bed, putting her thick pillows on her head. But that didn’t work either.

Drip, Drop, Drip, Drop, Drip…

So Fiona had nothing to do than to pet her most favorite dog Chihuahua in the world, Sprinkles. “Hey boy! I’m glad you’re not asleep… were you kept awake by the leaking tap?”

“Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrowwwwwwwwwwooooo!” Sprinkles sounded like he understood each word Fiona had said.

After a few more times of petting and getting wet doggy kisses from her pup, Fiona heard her door open, and Dad came in, wearing his sleeping gown.

“Hey Fiona, why are you still awake?”

“Because of that annoying tap, Dad, you know that it’s leaking.”

“Aw… Then the surprise is ruined! I was about to sneak in to check if you were asleep, if you were then I would fix it…”

“It’s ok, dad… why don’t you fix it now while I do something else?”

“Like what?”

“Write my diary, duh. That’s what I only do nowadays.”

“Oh yeah!” Dad slapped his forehead.” ’Totally forgot you even had a diary.”

“Whatever.”

August 30, 2003

Dear diary…

I’m writing very late now on my pull-out table, and I can’t believe dad would even let me write it. He could have sent me to bed while he was fixing that leaking tap. But anyway, he let me. Dad is acting so weird nowadays. He’s acting very nice to me. Too nice. He’s even trying to fix the leaking tap in my room. Not that I’m saying he can’t. He just doesn’t do it that much, he usually says that he’s piled with work and he’ll try doing it later. Maybe it’s because it’s nearly my birthday next week, maybe they’re going to plan a surprise party for ME!!!!

“Um, I’m done.”

“Whoa! Dad!! You scared me. Did you see anything on my diary???”

“Nope, not a thing.”

“Good. And…ummm…”

Fiona listened silently, checking if there was a drop of leaking water.

But there wasn’t.

“Goodnight!! Thanks for fixing the tap.”

“Don’t mention it.”

After saying goodnight to her dad, Sprinkles and her diary, she said goodnight to herself.

Chapter 2

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG!!!!!!!

Even though Fiona’s alarm clock had already rung, Fiona was still snugly sleeping with Sprinkles lying on her chest, barking at her to wake up.

“FIONA!!!!! COME DOWN NOW!!!! YOU’RE LATE AGAIN!!!!”

“Oh!!” Fiona cried.

So Fiona just dumped on a pair of jeans a plain purple sweater and a black scarf to wear for school, it was only August, but it was already quite cold. And off she went with Sprinkles, down to the kitchen, to eat their breakfast.

“You’re late again.” Mom grumbled. She was angry again because of Fiona’s lateness.

“I know and I was totally responsible for it. Well not really because of the leaking tap thing, you know that and then dad came to the rescue, he fixed the tap and if he didn’t I’d—“

“I know, I know, he fixed it. And if he didn’t, you’d be awake for the whole night. You said that to me when I fix things so I remember, okay?  Now eat faster, I’ll drive you to school because you are later than late.”

So Fiona and her mum finished their breakfast and rushed to school without saying a word.

WELCOME TO SEATTLE JUNIOR HIGH

“I can’t believe this is the first day of seventh grade already, mom! I am so, no I mean, super excited about this! I wonder if Lucy and I have the same class together!!”

Lucy Hillwood is Fiona’s best friend, and they have known each other since second grade. They both know when each other is sad, happy, excited, embarrassed…everything. Lucy like to play the flute, piano and the drums, and Fiona likes to play the guitar, singing pop songs and writing her diary, of course.

Fortunately, Lucy and Fiona were put in the same class. That means they will be able to chat together when they were having their lessons. But of course, Fiona and Lucy were good-grade students, so they will chat about the lesson or the teacher.

“Lucy!!! I can’t walk with you to lunch, okay? I got to have a little talk with Miss Bursa.  She was quite confusing in Science class. I don’t know how to do the homework she gave us.” Fiona said, breathless.

“It’s ok; I can walk by myself… “Lucy mumbled.

“What’s happening? I know that I’m-so-sad face of yours.” Fiona was always keeps a look out on how her friend feels.

“It’s nothing. I’m confused with homework, too.” Lucy said.

“Are you sure? I could skip the talk with Miss Bursa…”

“Look, I’m fine, okay? Why aren’t you going? You’re going to be late.” Lucy said, and she was getting angry.

“Ok, ok… I’m going, sheesh, calm down; I was just talking to you. Anyway, bye.”  Fiona said while turning around, to walk to the classroom she was in before.

Why was Lucy acting so strangely? Something was definitely up. And I am going to find out.

Chapter 3

September 1st, 2003

Dear Diary,

What is happening to Lucy???? We haven’t talked since the way to lunch. Even when we had to discuss in Literature she just wrote notes. NOTES!!! How can my best friend become silent!!!! We didn’t even fight. I have no idea what is going on with her. I was just telling that I couldn’t walk to lunch with her and she looked very sad, so I asked her what happened and poof—she get’s angry. Something must be happening with Lucy—and her family. AND I MUST FIND OUT WHAT IT IS.

Before school, Fiona had arrived to school earlier than anyone else (except the teachers, of course) so that she could go to the library to have some alone time. After writing her diary, she logged on to one of the school computers to check her email.

Dear parent/student                            SEATTLEJUNIOR

She opened Lucy’s email, hoping that it was about her “problem”. But the email was only about school homework and the talk with Miss Bursa. She wanted to ask her what was going on, and why she was angry at her yesterday, but she didn’t, she was scared of Lucy getting angry at her again, and if that happens, their friendship would be ruined.

Today, Lucy hasn’t shown up at her locker after the first bell, so Fiona kept on waiting. But after the second bell, Lucy still hasn’t shown up, so Fiona rushed to class, not caring about Lucy’s absence.

After school, Fiona headed straight home, to change into more comfortable and warm clothes, then, she would take Sprinkles out for a walk, heading straight to Lucy’s house.

When Fiona arrived to Lucy’s house, Lucy’s mum answered the door.

“Hi, Mrs. Hillwood, is Lucy here?”

“She has the flu, dear. I’m afraid she can’t come to school for the whole week.”

“Whole week? Oh, so that’s why she was angry at me a few days ago, she must be stressed.”

“Why don’t you go home now? It’s getting cold out here.”

“Okay, thanks Mrs. Hillwood, for telling me what happened to Lucy.”

“You’re welcome! Say hi to your mum for me!!!”

“Will do…!”

September 1st, 2003

Dear Diary,

I finally know what is going on with Lucy and her family, they all got the flu!! And I thought their mum and dad were fighting or something.

Oh yeah, my birthday is in 5 days!!! YAY!!!!!

“FEEEEEEEEEEEONNNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAA!!! Dinner time!”

“I’m coming!! Come on Sprinkles! Dinner’s ready!!!”

“Roooooooooooooooooowoooooooooo!!!” Fiona took that as a ‘yay!’ In doggy language.

“I have never been so full in my entire life, that macaroni and cheese was great, mom.” Fiona said, rubbing her belly.

“Well, that recipe was always your favorite, and tonight I made it cheesier, which means yummier!” Fiona’s mum said, pleased with her cooking.

After dinner, Fiona asked if she could go to her mum’s study and check her mail. Dad was still at work, so she couldn’t use the high-tech computer that dad has.
