Susie in her new found home in our yard enjoying a nap in a hot afternoon. Susie is an African Leopard tortoise and she is a little over a year old. Actually we can't tell the sex of the tortoise yet but my kids think it's a female for now. She eats all kinds of weeds, grass and vegetables. In fact, her new favorite food is my green bean sprouts!
We have 9 Koi fish in our pond. They are about 34 years old and they are (in my opinion - my husband doesn't think so) very chubby because they are very well fed (my failed bread is their supplemental diet!). My kids love playing at the pond when the weather is nice. Even the fish seems to be used to them and will come up and suck their toes.
Wow it gets that cold! How do you get the motivation to go outside in such cold weather especially with a young kid?
The best Koi comes from Japan and it's can get very cold there too (maybe not as cold as where you are). My husband has shown me a picture of a Koi pond with a very thick layer of ice on top and the fish just stays on the bottom of the very deep pond.
In any event, having a pond or a water garden in the yard is very enjoyable. Hope you get to create one someday.
Thanks. Our tortoise can grow to over 100 lbs and live to over 80 years old! We have talked to our kids that they would need to take care of "Susie" after we go... =)
We love the flowing water in our yard because it's very soothing to us. Other people may find it noisy. Actually Koi fish are very hardy and they will do just fine in very cold weather (according to my husband). Having a pond is a big toy for my kids especially in the summer when it gets too hot to go to the park!
