Romans 羅馬書 12:19 ~20 因為經上記著、『主說、伸冤在我．我必報應。』 所以『你的仇敵若餓了、就給他吃．若渴了、就給他喝．因為你這樣行、就是把炭火堆在他的頭上。』
For it is said in the holy Writings, Punishment is mine, I will give reward, says the Lord.
But if one who has hate for you is in need of food or of drink, give it to him, for in so doing you will put coals of fire on his head.
「你的仇敵....頭上」：引自 箴 25:21 。 「炭火」：「燃燒的炭」或「活的炭」。 近代的解經家認為「炭火」是指人極端羞辱、懊悔時，心中像火焚燒的那種痛苦。 「炭火堆在他的頭上」：是指用愛心對待仇敵，使其自覺羞愧而悔悟。
That man had some coals of fire heaped on his head - the Christian behavior of his neighbor left him burning with shame. But it also lit a fire in him that didn't go out until he found the grace of God, too. God grant that all of us may adopt the Lord's methods of justice, forgiving as we have been forgiven, showing mercy where God has been merciful to us, reflecting the kindness that gleams in our Savior's love for us. What have we Christians got coming to us? We've got eternal life coming to us... God grant that we may help bring it, also, to those who live around us!
