Summary
Jerusha Abbott was brought up in an asylum for seventeen years. One day, she was summoned to see the matron of the asylum and was informed that she was given a chance by a trustee to study in a college so as to be nutured as a writer.
She was required to write a letter to tell her trustee, who she named him as “Daddy-Long-Legs” by his appearance, once a month to report what happen around her as a practice of writing. In her letter, she talked about her school life, social life with friends and new experience of upholstering her own dormitory. She did a thing as she had been longing to do it. That is to change her name from Jerusha to Judy! She also told Daddy Long Legs about her feelings towards the grown up background differences such as that she had not read much books which most teenagers there had already. She also revealed her feeling of lonely and the strong will to have a normal family by sharing her background lying that she had her own warm family.
After having a single room by her own self in the first year, she went to Lock Willow and shared her experience and life there with Daddy. She loved to be involved in a life consisting of nature and freedom. The vacation ended pretty quickly and soon she became a sophomore and shared a study with her two roommates.
During Christmas, she spent her time in a big old house with her classmate and family. She felt so great in spending time with them where again showed her dream to have a loving family. Later then, she got her own story published and she was delighted to that news. In April, Judy had got a chance to visit New York and she was freaked out by all the fabulous things there. Pretty quickly, she went on a field trip, or a picnic I would call, and had fun with her classmate. She enjoyed her life very much indeed by comparing this with her awful past and thanked Daddy-Long-Legs for letting her to have a brand new starting of life.
Summer came silently and she received an invitation to spend her second vacation in her sophomore life in the McBrides’ Camp. She was overjoyed at that news and reported to Daddy happily. However, Daddy did not approve it and that Judy had to stayed in Lock Willow as she did before. Her feeling was hurt. She pouted out how lonely she felt and Daddy was the only one she would care for. She even digged out the card that she had got when she was once sick and read it over to remember how caring her once be Daddy was.
In her third summer vacation, Daddy kindly offered a chance for Judy to visit Europe but she refused it as she had planned to tutor Mrs. Charles Paterson’s daughter to earn money. She had become more and more independent. Following Mr. Jervis Pendleton’s letter, Judy travelled from Cliff Top, Mrs Paterson’s home back to Lock Willow to spend her last two weeks of summer vacation.
In winter, Judy told Daddy that she got a negative reply from the editor of the publisher that her newly written novel was not very good. She first got upset but recovered pretty well and started another one soon. Gradually, she got along with Mr. Jervis Pedleton who was a good companionable man. She fell in love with him and spilled all her thoughts and feelings towards him in the letter to Daddy. Mr. Jervis had even proposed to Judy but as she was shamed about her past, Judy refused it. Later then, she told all her depression to Daddy for comfort.
When the semaster almost slipped away, Judy went to Lock Willow again and one day she received a message that Daddy-Long-Legs would like to see her. She got so happy and travelled to Madison Avenue. When she got to see Daddy, she freaked out as Daddy was Mr. Jerivs, her beloved one!
Describe the Major Character briefly:
Jerusha Abbott, a lucky girl who got a chance to be further educated. She could be emotional sometimes as she had been rude to Daddy when she was sick. She was an observant girl who could find out the tiniest thing to be happy with. Her writing skills was well-practised and her description to the world surounding her was perfect as I can imagine how beautiful the scenery Lock Willow was.
Interesting incident:
The whole book is ineresting, to be exact. Jerusha’s life was always positive and joyful. In her own point of view, a normal matter like buying stuff for the dormitory. Her feeling was not the same as other and me will think of. She was so glad that she could use her money freely and got change after buying a book. That was a new angle of looking the world to me.
Reflection:
Life seems to be simple. However, it may not be true when we use another angle to treat the world. Jerusha was an foundling. Therefore, shed treasure everything that she was given. She always thanked Daddy for giving presents to her. That’s what we should do but we seems to always forget it. Nothing is given once we have born. We must thank for what we got and not forgetting the one who offer it to you.
Family was there once we came to the world. But it was not to Jerusha. From the letters she wrote to Daddy, I can see clearly that Judy had a shadow in family and she desperately want to have a perfect past consist of love and care instead of systematic life with other orphans. I make me felt sorry for her and the effect of the past cannot be wiped away that easily. It lasts for eternity.
What makes me feel better is that Jerusha did not mourn over her past but compared it with what she had got and be pleased with that. It is the attitude that we should learn from her. Never soak in what we have lost but enjoy what we have gained.
