On Sunday evening, the Emmy Awards, the TV equivalents of the Oscars, were presented to the best of the small screen in Los Angeles. Let's have a quick look at the winners in the top categories:

Best Series, Drama:
The mob drama, "The Sopranos", claimed its final Emmy as the best drama series.

Best Series, Comedy:
The award for best comedy series went to "30 Rock", a sitcom about a TV show.

Best Actor, Drama:
James Spader rubbed out three-time winner James Gandolfini of "The Sopranos" and took top honours for his role as a lawyer in the drama "Boston Legal".

Best Actress, Drama
A Hollywood veteran, Sally Field was named the best actress in a drama for her role in "Brothers and Sisters" as a mother whose son serves in the Iraq war. In her rambling acceptance speech, she used a swear word which had to be bleeped by Fox censors.

Also...

One of the night's standing ovations went to former US vice president Al Gore, who picked up an Emmy for his interactive TV channel featuring viewer-created videos.

4. 得獎

There are millions of ways to say that someone wins a prize or an award. (See all the expressions in pink.)

艾美獎得獎者是... = And the Emmy goes to...

獲頒 = be presented with the award for best actor

獲得殊榮 = take top honours

榮獲 = be honoured with the best actress award/be honoured as the best actress

稱帝/稱后 = be named the best actor/actress

摘得 = pick up

6. veteran

e.g. 1: [Adjective] a veteran actor 老牌男演員

e.g. 2: [Adjective] He collects veteran cars. 他收集「老爺車」。

e.g. 3: [Noun] He's veteran of World War II. 他是二次大戰的退伍軍人。

e.g. 4: The 25-year police veteran finally got promoted.服務警隊已25年的「老差骨」終於獲晉升了。

e.g. 4: [Noun] Hollywood veteran Clint Eastwood has starred in many movies. 荷里活老牌影星奇連伊士活曾主演多部電影。

7. rambling [adj]: too long and confused 長而紊亂的

ramble [verb]: 沒完沒了的說

e.g. She rambled on and on about her husband and children.

8. give an acceptance speech = 致謝詞/領獎詞/講得獎感受

9. swear word 粗話

Sally Field blurted out a swear word that got bleeped in her acceptence speech.

Sally Field 講得獎感受時粗話衝口而出，「被人嘟」。

All swear words, even mild ones such as 'damn' (「頂」), have to be bleeped from TV shows.

10. He received a standing ovation = 全場為他起立鼓掌。
