「人靠衣裝」、「不要以貌取人」英文怎樣說?

今天來談談中英成語/諺語的對照。
你知道idiom 和 proverb 兩個字的分別嗎? Idioms 和 proverbs 都是日常生活中常用的熟語、慣用語﹐不過idioms 的真義不同於字面意思,而proverbs 則沒有隱意,是簡單淺白、精闢凝練的前人智慧。
e.g. 'Kill the goose that lays the golden egg' has a hidden meaning of 'destroying something that makes a lot of money' --> Idiom
e.g. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. --> Proverb (no hidden meaning)
人們經常說「先敬羅衣後敬人」、「人靠衣裝﹐佛靠金妝」﹐英文是什麼呢? 就是 Clothes make the man/the person.

e.g. Clothes Make the Person. After your pearly whites and your twinkling eyes, clothes are the next thing the interviewer will see. 所謂人靠衣裝, 面試員先留意你的明眸皓齒, 接下來便看你的衣著。
「人靠衣裝」的相反就是「不要以貌取人」, 英文怎樣說呢? Don't judge a book by its cover.

e.g. You don't judge a book by its cover, so good-looking people aren't necessarily smarter. 你不應以貌取人, 俊男美女不一定較精明。
下回再談。![]()

Teacher, they are "idol tutors" in HK, well groomed and packaged. Google them if you want to know more.

Teacher, tutors in HK need to be good looking. The more good looking/chic you are, the more students you'll have, and the more money you'll make!
Saw June Leung and Richard Eng on ATV tonight. Do you know them?

Bella la bella,
Somebody pushed my button and I ranted and raved like a maniac in one of Mr Siu's recent blogs. I just realized part of that rant actually applies here. So here's a revised part of it:
In a perfect world, all the women would be strong, all the men goodlooking, and all the children above average.
But we'll never get there. The world will always set arbitary standards on everything and discriminate against those not meeting them. It's human nature. So, while it's nice not to judge a book by its cover, we all inevitably do. Until the world is perfect, we should mind our appearance reasonably, and try not to mind others' unnecessarily.
That's why I always wear a long sleeve dress shirt and a tie when I teach, in any weather, even though I am the only teacher to do so. It is not just my attempt to have the students take me seriously, but also my expression of respect to them, as tuition paying students of the school.

傻妹早晨!
你栗姐超懶,所以平日是T恤牛仔褲便算。要我為自己扮靚,暫時比較不可能 (有時間都看多本書啦
)
傻妹的工作鬆動點了嗎?記得要爭取時間休息,別累壞自己啊!

Justin, "such" means "this type of". ; "such as" means "for example". Both are usually followed by a noun or nouns.

Bella, thanks for such a good lesson. ''Don't judge a book by its cover" is a really good practice. However, as 一舊雲 said, people always judge a person by looking at what they wear or by thier appearance. I understand that appearance is important. But personality is really important as well. Hope people don't just judge a book its its cover. Do judge by its content.

傻妹早晨!
睡了一覺,感覺好點了嗎?
贊成不應以貌取人,但要給別人良好的impression,尤其是初見面的,穿戴得體非常重要,剛好印證了「人靠衣裝」一句。
要出來做事做了那麼久,方明白到,人,真是要靠衣裝的,所以有空要多多幫襯祈櫻子的五個衣架
謝謝妹子給我們上了寶貴的一課。
