昨晚新聞報導, 一名清潔工人工作時, 發現一具連有臍帶的初生男嬰屍體遭棄置在垃圾收集站。 這究竟是什麼世代, 居然有如此駭人的聽聞!

警方今早帶同嗅探犬搜索至附近一幢大廈,暫時未有進一步的發現。

The body of a newborn baby boy with his umbilical cord uncut was found dumped at a rubbish collection point at midnight on Sunday. Police were led by sniffer dogs to a nearby building for further investigation yesterday.

法醫官奉召到場驗屍,暫未知男嬰是否產前夭折,需剖屍檢驗,以確定死因。

A forensic expert was called to the scene to conduct a post-mortem on the body. Police said it was still not known if the infant was born dead. An autopsy is needed to identify the cause of death.

1. 嗅探犬與「索K」

我們有時在機楊會碰見海關的緝私犬，那些專門用其靈敏的鼻子嗅出匿藏行李中的毒品、炸彈或其他違禁品的，就是「嗅探犬」，英文是sniffer dog，而專門緝毒的緝毒犬是drug detector dog。 (Sniffer dogs are used at airports to sniff out drugs, bombs or other contrabands hidden in luggage.)

Sniff 這個字，相等於廣東話的「索」，意思細分如下：

(a) to smell something by taking air in through your nose 聞；嗅:

e.g.He sniffed his socks to see if they needed washing. (Cambridge Dictionaries Online)

(b) to breathe air into your nose noisily, for example when you are crying or have a cold 「索鼻」(抽鼻涕[chou1 bi2 ti]); 「個鼻嘶嘶嗦嗦」（鼻子發出呼哧呼哧[hu1 chi]聲）

e.g. Stop sniffing and blow your nose. （Longman Online Dictionary) 唔好係度索鼻，去呻鼻涕啦。（別老抽鼻涕，快去擤[xing3]鼻吧。）

(c) to take in a harmful drug or substance,usually in the form of gas, by breathing it up your nose because of the feelings of pleasure that this gives 為得快感而用鼻吸（「索」）氣狀的毒品或有害物質

e.g. He was expelled from school for sniffing glue.  (Cambridge Dictionaries Online) 他因為「索膠水」被學校開除。

e.g. a paint thinner sniffer 「索天拿水」的人

注意：sniff 和snort 意思相近，都指用鼻吸毒，不過人們一般sniff 氣體，如sniff glue，sniff paint thinner, 但snort 粉狀毒品，如snort cocaine, snort ketamine, 即「索可卡因」、「索K」。

2. 萬用的dump

dump 字很管用，常見用法如下(Cambridge Dictionaries Online)：

(a) to put down or drop something in a careless way 隨手放下或「擗」低

e.g. He came in with four shopping bags and dumped them on the table.

(b) to get rid of something unwanted, especially by leaving it in a place where it is not allowed to be 「抌」（dump 跟「抌垃圾」的「抌」同音，很易記）或「擗咗佢」、棄置，尤指隨處棄置

e.g. Several old cars had been dumped near the beach.

(c) INFORMAL to suddenly end a romantic relationship you have been having with someone 「掟咗佢」、「飛咗佢」

e.g. If he's so awful, why don't you just dump him?

補充一點，如果想說某人「拋妻棄子」，還可以說He walked out on his wife and kids.

3. 產前夭折

「產前夭折」，即「死產」、「死胎」，英文除了可以說He was born dead, 還可說He was a stillbirth.

4. post-mortem VS autopsy

兩者都解驗屍以查明死因，但post-mortem (post-mortem examination 的簡稱）泛指各種死後檢驗，不論剖屍與否(whether it involves cutting open the body or not), 而autopsy只狹義地指「剖屍檢驗」。

注意：留意詞語搭配to conduct/perform/carry out a post-mortem/autopsy on a body (對...進行驗屍)
