      看便便學英語－此Stool不同彼Stool

      本篇承接「肚疴」、「肚痛」英文點講？．．．，繼續談談便便的問題。

      “The Bristol Stool Scale or Bristol Stool Chart is a medical aid designed to classify the faeces (排洩物) form into seven groups. […] The form of the stool depends on the time it spends in the colon (結腸).”

      “Types 1 and 2 indicate constipation (便秘); 3 and 4 are the easiest to pass while types 5-6 are more symptomatic of diarrhea (較像腹瀉的癥狀), while type 7 may be a sign (跡象) of cholera (霍亂), food poisoning (食物中毒) , etc.”

      從這幅圖, 我們不但可以知道自己的身體狀況, 還可以學到很多用來形容物質狀態的英語。

      1.      Stool

      一般解作「凳子」,作醫科術語則是「糞便」的意思，在醫院裡醫生和菲傭談到小主人的便便，就會用stool這個字。

      He told the doctor he had been passing bloody stools (帶血的糞便).

      2.      lump

      指沒特別形狀的硬塊, 也可指身體隆起的腫塊。可作量詞用, 即廣東話的「一舊」

      She found a lump in her right breast. (Touch wood!)

      We need two more lumps of charcoal to start the fire.

      3.      pass

      這個字有很多解釋, 這裡解作「排洩」, 是比較正經的講法, 但沒excrete 那樣正式。Pass urine是「排尿」, pass blood 就是「排血(血尿或血便)」。

      4.      lumpy

      來自名詞lump, 這是形容詞, 意指covered with or containing lumps, 即廣東話的「一舊舊」。

      Throw away this lumpy pillow! Get yourself another one.

      5.      crack 裂縫

      Cracks begin to show on the walls of the old house.

      6.      blob

      作量詞用, 意思是a fat round drop, usually of something sticky or thick, 即「一滴、一團」,也就是廣東話的「一pat、一撻」。常見的搭配有a blob of paint/glue

      Last time I got a blob of paint on the carpet and I ended up carefully cutting it off.

      7.      fluffy

      這個字有兩個解釋, 一是毛茸茸(soft and woolly or furry), 二是鬆軟(light and full of air)。

      Newly hatched chicks (剛孵出的小雞) are like fluffy balls.

      I like soft and fluffy cakes.

      8.      ragged

      (指人)衣衫襤褸的; (指衣服)破舊的; (指事物的邊緣)鋸齒狀的、凹凸不平, 即廣東話的「岩岩慚慚」。

      The ragged children were wearing ragged clothes.

      The leaves of this plant have ragged edges.

      9.      mushy糊狀的

      Cook the peas until they are mushy.

        If you have tummy trouble:

        you can say you've got the runs

        OR

        You've got the runs to the toilet

        OR

        You've got diarrhea.

        “係咪黑到墨咁？” --> Is it as black as ink?

        “好似一盤墨咁？” --> Just like a pool of ink?

        'pool' 這裡不是解‘池塘’或‘泳池’，而是量詞，相當於中文的 ‘一灘'. We can say 'a pool of blood' and 'a pool of ink'.

        因為曾在n年前患過胃病，後來又曾在電視上聽見醫生說胃出血會排黑便，在某一天真的發現了黑便，馬上找醫生。醫生瞪大眼睛的問：「有無黑到墨咁？」猶豫了一下，醫生就不以為然的說不會是胃出血，他還說當你見到一盤墨時，你就會知道自己是胃出血了，不肯定就不會是胃出血。聽罷醫生的一番禪話後，我想我是明白的，可是又不肯定真的明白（多矛盾）。雖然無病，但醫生那句「黑到墨咁」依然深入腦海。我想他說的墨是指寫書法時手磨的那一種墨，所以才有此一問…是否對着洋醫生說black mushy stool就可以。

        Isis, 就顏色而言,可叫做"dark/black stool" , watery 和mushy 是形容詞, 可以加在stool 前來形容便便的質地 -->e.g. black mushy stool (Yuck! )

        不好意思啦，還有stool問題要問，bloody stool有兩種，其一當然是鮮血那種，另一種是胃出血，stool會如墨般，那是不是說black watery或black mushy就可以。

        The following a an extract from Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary as quoted by Yrag and my anaylsis:

        evaluate suggests an attempt to determine relative or intrinsic worth in terms other than monetary （這個字跟value 有關，意思就是衡量某人的價值-->評估、估價等）

        assess implies a critical appraisal for the purpose of understanding or interpreting, or as a guide in taking action （這個也是評估的意思，不同是我們為了進一步的目的而assess，我們藉assessment 來跟進一些事情。）

        讓我們從一些例子看看兩者的分別：

        1。Course evaluation --> 一般的課後評估，沒有特定的目的

        2。The insurers will need to assess the flood damage. （--> assess the damage 以釐定賠償金額）
        3。Examinations are not the only means of assessing a student's ability. (-->再用results of the assessment來分班或決定學生的程度等）
        4。[+ question word] We need to assess whether the project is worth doing. （以決定計劃是否可行）

        記得之前跟在出版社工作的朋友閒聊，提及台灣有一本叫《大便書》的兒童讀物，介紹消化和排泄系統。朋友說，香港的老師和家長很多都覺得這種書「不雅」，思想真是迂腐得可以！排便本是生活的一部分，有甚麼好忌諱的？

        愛德華 : I looked up both words in many dictionaries.  They are indeed very similar, but here is what the American Heritage and the Merriam-Webster say about these two words.  (They both list the words under the entry on estimate.)

        OMG!!  Actually, I just looked up the same chart a couple of weeks ago when the Bio professor talked about the digestive system.  Very informative.  Now I can never look at my "by-product" the same again.
