Been a bit OTT in researching/buying stuff for Julie recently.
It started off innocently enough, mail-order stuff from Australia and the US because they were on discount: 40 pcs of generic dewormer tablets, 2 packs of frontline, no-pull trainer leash, dog id tag...all quite necessary and were good buys.
Then it became a bit more frivolous: orange Buster Cube, squeaky tug-of-war toy to replace Mashimaro I and II (one handle now gone - its only been 3 weeks), Large Kong, FURminator (like Julie's actually not a big shedder, or only between seasons), generic Zoom Groom-like grooming thingybub...
As of this moment, 4 hardcover books on holistic dog care and training are on their way from Paddyfields.com...I've also bought 2 online articles from the Whole Dog Journal and theDogFoodConspiracy.com....(for enlightenment....apart from what I could glean out of the 80+ internet links in my Favourite Bookmarks directory on subjects ranging from canine nutrition, behaviour to illnesses and first aid.)
$$$$ asides, I'm starting to realize that this is all bordering on the compulsive....I wonder what is driving me so...or maybe I do know - its the realization that Meimei didn't have the best, out of which sprouted the fear that I might be an utterly terrible Juliema...
But then, as if someone up there thought I needed a reminder, I ran into this article which is well worth sharing with all...
『惜買識廢』綠色消費-飼主分享篇
隨著香港人生活水準提升，飼養動物人士不斷增加，這方面消費數字持續上升。消耗型的浪費生活模式，不單把空氣弄混濁，更把大地糟蹋。
不難預見，「廢物」和「空氣質素議題」，是香港未來主要的環保難題，我們必須盡早正視! 因此，我們推動「惜買識廢」運動，從「心」改善環境。
惜買篇 您的消費抉擇是強大的力量， 足以影響這個地球的命運!
購買愛寵日常用品前，請先「停一停、想一想」，「三思而後買」，堅持「有用才買」的信念。 狂購物的習慣如上癮，愈買愈不滿足，愈買愈空虛。家裏愛寵，最渴望得到是飼主「簡單的愛」，並非「五顏六色的商品」。
1. 不要購買過多或不需要的物品，更忌無緣無故亂買多餘的物質文明垃圾，減少產生廢物。舉例 :一把寵物趾甲剪對於一位因害怕而從不親手為愛寵修剪趾甲的飼主，用途何在？請放棄購買不會使用之物品。
2. 不常用的東西，可問朋友借回來的，就不用買。舉例 :愛犬不幸足部受傷，暫需借助手推車輔助外出散步。可向朋友借用，愛犬康復後歸還。
3. 不做「賤物鬥窮人」的奴隸。衹買最稱心滿意、最合用、最耐用的消費品，寵物所需是重「質」不重「量」。舉例 : 三包過期小食可能令愛寵食壞了肚皮，遠不及充滿愛心主人所端上三片「未逾賞味期」小食來得窩心。
4. 自備購物袋，減少使用膠袋。留意貨物的包裝，少買獨立型式或過度包裝的物品。大部份膠袋不能分解，每年更有大量海洋生物被纏或誤吃飄浮在海上的膠袋致死。
5. 選購以有機方式生產的食品，?可減少化學農藥和肥料毒害愛寵身體，又可減低對環境造成污染 。
6. 養成先看清楚寵物飼料包裝成分標籤，後購買習慣。盡量避免購買含有害添加劑的食品，常見化學防腐劑?例 : Ethoxyquin、 Propylene Glycol、 Propyl Gallate、 Bulylated Hydroxyanisole(BHA) 、 Butylated Hydroxytoluene(BHT)等等。 化學防腐劑並不能被身體吸收後自然排出，卻積存於內臟，尤其是肝臟裏，殘害愛寵健康。
7. 選購無漂染毛巾，避免漂染過程產生的污水影響海洋生態。選購天然纖維如棉質的，少買人造纖維的衣物等。減低誘發愛寵敏感症。 動物測試是極不人道的行為，避免購買那些利用動物作測試的美容產品。愛護動物，凡是會危害瀕臨絕種生物的消費品均拒絕購買。
識廢篇 循環再造，使廢物變回有用的資源!
1. 長期堅持棄置商品包裝時將包裝物料作源頭分類，卡紙拆去膠面放進廢紙回收箱循環再造。膠袋盡可能再用，污穢膠袋也可作清理動物糞便之用等。盡可能「廢」盡其用。
2. 不合用的動物用品，可轉贈他人或捐贈予本會。有助保持家居簡潔。舉例 : 飼主不準備添養幼犬，家中成犬於幼犬期使用之狗籠、項圈、牽繩、餐碗、狗籠等等已不再合用，可作捐贈用途。
3. 不適用之愛寵飼糧，可轉贈他人或捐贈予本會。舉例 : 愛犬對已購入某牌子狗糧產生食物敏感反應，餘下不再餵飼之狗糧可作捐贈用途。
4. 塑膠容器回收再造。舉例 : 盛載寵物潔毛液塑膠容器，用完清洗乾淨後可送往塑料回收箱循環再造。
5. 舊的毛巾，加以改變，可成為狗狗玩具。舉例於舊毛巾首尾位置綁結，成為與愛犬玩擲出檢回遊戲的玩具。

And so, I've decided...in order to salve my guilty conscience...to donate that spanking-new pink harness (that Julie has outgrown in a wink), the bright yellow nylon muzzle (Julie complains, "Scratchy"), the battery-operated canine toothbrush (Julie complains, "Too much bzzz, Mom") and (just maybe, and definitely secretly) that oversized doggie bowl from Bigsta to the HKDR/the following recycling program.
