新文人畫不是一個固定的、地方性的藝術流派，

它是在1980至1990年代中國改革開放下，

在時代變遷當中產生的一種藝術轉向，

一次不約而同地發生的藝術運動。

“New Literati Painting” is neither an art organization with a defined manifesto nor

a regional school with a distinctive style. 

It may be regarded as a convergence of artists with common goals

coinciding with various art and cultural movements set against the background of rapid changes during the 1980s and 1990s,

a period inaugurating the “open-door” policy and reforms in China.
