People on Cheung Chau Island celebrate the Bun festival in the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. Many people from all over Hong Kong go there for the festival too. There are ferries from Central to Cheung Chau. It takes about thirty minutes to go there by ferry.
People can buy sweet buns there. They believe that the buns can bring good luck to them. They can also watch the procession. There are lion dances, colourful floats and people playing Chinese music.
In the old days, people built the bun towers with bamboo. They climbed up the towers to get the buns. In 1978, a tower fell and hurt many people.
Now, people build the towers with bamboo and steel to make them stronger. They cannot climb the towers. Only the competitors can climb and get the buns. The person with the highest score wins in the competition.
