I liked to collect HK magazines when I was young. I've collected many 電影雙週 long ago and was forced to throw them away because of my limited space. Movie Biweekly had become a very commercial book without much reading value in her latter days (the last issue was published in early 2007). Since then no local movie magazines are published until today, I find a book named 香港電影 in the street bookstores.
This is a brand new monthly movie magazine published with the assistance of the HK movie critics society. There are many interviews and articles concerning HK movie directors and movies. The aim and direction of this magazine is pretty clear as stated in its cover, a magazine focused on the local movie productions and to reinforce the definition of HK local movies. Essays include interviews with directors, production notes of recent movies, history of HK movie magazines, and film classic reviewing Tsui Hak's early "violence trilogy". Although the articles are influenced by the thoughts and phrases of mainland China, this magazine is the most sincere, academic and conceptual movie magazine I've seen these years. All the articles are very intellectual and informative, not just gossips about the film production and actors like the other movie news today.
I'm just worried if the magazine only focussed on local movies, are there enough HK movies for discussion in the coming months? I hope this magazine can be accepted by the HK movie audiences who look for some serious movie essays, and also welcomed by the China audiences. Though the HK movies are declining, I still insist to watch some interesting and sincere HK films these years. I haven't abandoned the local movie productions and I hope HK movies and "香港電影" can start a new page in the movie history.
