After arriving at the city, I went to have a coffee in Cafe Nicholas first. The coffee there was really good.
The city is not large, can finish in 3-4 hours. I even did not have a map, just walked with my feeling, sense and camera.
There were not many ppl in town today, really a good day and good place for exploration, sensation and stimulation.`

Against capitalism???? wow, be careful!!!

In Comibra, there is in fact a route about Republica. I dont know what is its significance. Just found a lot of houses with the sign and words Republic on them. I guess, may be because of the university, the city becomes a significant political centre, fostering new waves of thought and movement for the country.

I dont really know much about politics. So just keep my feeling on lovely thing. And, yes, Coimbra is a lovely and romantic place, even the sign of a resturant is so romantic.

Estudei lá em Coimbra, que sem dúvida uma das cidades mais atraentes de Portugal. Vivendo lá, pode aspirar o ar "universitário" e pacate.

and my neighbour also studied in Coimbra... I know ppl in Portugal are very proud if they study in Comibra.
I have a joke. My classmate's dad and sister both studied in Coimbra, so when they knew she was not going to Coimbra but Aveiro, they were all disappointed.... They thought it shld be their family tradition that every one studies in Coimbra
噢! 地利 ..Oh!tria 2009-02-16 05:39

And Coimbra is located in the north of Lisbon and Fatima, the holy land in Portugual, and south of Aveiro. U can search it on google map.
I guess there are also many such beautiful universities in Germany too.

Ada, I am so happy you had so much fun in Coimbra :)
Actually what you saw in the buildings saying "Republica" has nothing to do with politics :) It's related to the strong student culture in coimbra. Republicas are what they call in Coimbra to houses or flats where students live :) they have this name and also, as far as I know (because I also don't know the traditions in Coimbra that well) there is also kind of a hierarchy inside the house, depending on the students that live there for a longer or shorter time or for how many years they've been in the university or something like that.
This is what I found in english about the "Republicas"
Mythical spaces of the Academy, the "Repúblicas" of Coimbra date back to the 14th century, a period the number of students was increasing in the city, as a result of its own affirmation as an important centre of studies.
In order to surpass the needs of accommodation, King Dinis created, in 1309, a royal charter aiming the construction of houses for the students in the area of Almedina. The price of the rent was established by a commission designated y the King and formed by students and "gentlemen" from the city.
So, it was with the construction of these houses that the republics have appeared.
