Chateau Malescot St. Exupery 2004, 2nd Growth, Margaux.

Deep ruby with tight rim. Vivid strawberry, raspberry and cherry fruit evolving into blackberry-then blackcurrant- returning with a bouquet of rose and violets! Decidedly black fruit, it stays ‘blackcurrant pastille’ on nose and palate, recalling fond memories of favourite Rowntrees in terms of structure and fruitiness. Changing nose and palate, albeit within the fruit-floral-spicy-oak framework. Great classicism .On palate, ice-cream, vanilla creamy, cream powder enveloping red fruit driving a spicy finish. Slightly waxy and bon-bon; always fragrant. Merlot influences a lot with slightly higher ABV. Pleasing and pleasant. A Margaux towards the feminine spectrum. Great terroir.

Chateau du Tertre 4th Growth, Margaux.

Deep ruby with tight rim. Mixed cherry, plum and blackcurrant fruit subdued by tones of roast meat, toast aromas of chocolate, dried herbs and nuttiness. ON palate, strong notes of lush grassiness, licorice and blackcurrant punctuated by minerality. Dense and chunky, the quality testifies the 70 feet deep gravel, sub-soil and higher Cabernet Franc composition(than Malescot in this case). On decantation, a structured wine with ample and fine tannins, giving a currant and plumy finish. Very Arsac.

Chateau Bertinerie Cru Reserve 2006, Cotes de Bordeaux.

Medium ruby with pink rim. Clean red cherry and plum fruit suppressed by tones of coffee and moca, which leads to clean licorice and vanilla oak. On palate, lean and tight red fruit with nice acidities, driving towards a bone dry and fruity finish. Very elegant.

I agree that many top-tier wines (particularly the "super seconds") of 2003 perform well, like the two Pichons, but not the common classified growths as I quoted. Does the Right Bank fare better?

    no-a lot still lack structure.

Totally agree! Most 2003s had unreasonably high prices when the vintage was once boasted as the "the best vintage after 2000". Now the prices have fallen and the qualities can be reflected.

Im talking about Bordeaux Crus, it carried some water at that point of time. Of course, as you probably agree, time can tell.

Yes, both 2004 and 2003 are inexpensive. I have the latter too. To people's surprise, I found a few bottles of 2003 tannic and austere: Cantemerle, Haut Bergey, Du Tertre, etc. The vintage's wines are not so "early matured" as many people say. How do you think of Haut Batailley 2003 then? I have often baulked at opening a 2003 since the tasting experience.

I concur. That was quite a good general statement with reasonable qualifying. Balance vintage 2003, most left bank crus are relatively hollow and did not have what we call the structure and texture to outshine other hotter vintages. Even 2002 and 2004, may be for marketing reasons by now, have recently been rated a little higher for some. Yeah, ftruit dried out faster compared to 2005.

I've decided to buy Malescot St. Exupery 2004. That should be a bargain. Have you tasted Haut Batailley 2004? Though it's a Pauillac, I suppose it should be quite approachable.

More with St. Julien type of personality: fine tannins and structured in medium frame. I tasted that wine some time ago-may not updated enough with this one, It 's more an 'underdog' to some extent. SHould be a bargain. Good luck.

Hi, Kevin. Have you tasted Malescot St. Exupery 1989 and 1998? They are $580 and $480 respectively. I have tried Giscours 1989. The price was similar and it was very nice. As your notes reveal, 2004 should also be worth a try as it is $390 only, cheaper than other recent vintages.

No problem. I don't want to buy it now. The price is okay, but I would opt for Chateau Bellevue de Tayac 2005.

Tasted by RP at 87 pts in 1997. His comments were not bad. Now sold at $340. Wonder if it worths a try.

Look for choices; look for new tastings. Alternatives: Cantermerle, Potensac, La Lagune-though they are all different.

Hi, Kevin. How do you think of Ch. Sociando Mallet 1993? Is it declined?

    Kevin K Tang2009-10-12 16:37

Not sure. I have not taste it recently. A sleeper like Sociando should still be with some fruit. However, I would opt for some other wine if I have the choice.

Have only tried Chateau Malescot St. Exupery 2002 before which is a bit disappointing.  Seems like your 2004 is better.

What is "double decanting"? Does it mean pouring the wine into the decanter and then pour it back to the bottle? Or the procedure of pouring it back to the decanter from the bottle again is also included? How long is the time in between the pourings?

Malescot 2004 seems attractive! I have Du Tertre 2004. How long did you breathe the two wines?

    Kevin K Tang2009-09-17 10:16

I did my tasting double decanted for one hour. It wat not adequate especially for Du Tertre as it is still tough but Maslescot is strarting. HAlf of the wine was left in the bottle recorked for 6 hours(from one to 7). We  3 were in business.
