I tasted 2 samples from Casa MXXX last night. 3 more samples to taste before making a decision to work on this brand.
The Cyrese Sauvignon Blanc 2008 gave vivid citrus fruit and ripeness, oozing typical substantive content of SB-passion fruit, gooseberry and melon- with lurking biscuit(not sure if correct), mineral and earth tones, crushed mint-leaves and grass. It gave a ripe palate driving to a long, spicy finish. ABV is much higher than I expected from a Casablanc especially when it was supposed to be 4 km to the shore, but definitely the wine was still clean and crisp enough to be iconic. Classic, with lots of new elements.
The Lo Abarca Hills Pinot Noir 2006, I confessed, was not the PN I used to savor. Deep ruby, giving a generous jammy dark cherry tones, albeit still with orangey and kumquat notes, during towards a dried plum and prune finish with its dried skinned touch finish. Very, very hot wine with a spicy and meaty (iberico) finish. New style, but you cannot say it is not reflective of the varietal and terroir characters regardless. Not balanced enough-but fine tannins with a velvety finish.
Quite an experience! THese 2 wines require more imagination that I had that evening-I would have to keep myself open minded enough.
Will work on it GW, another SB and Syrah next week.
