Interview

We have interview 40 boys and 41 girls who are aged between 10 and 30 and half of them have met the “HK men” and “HK women” before, especially “HK women’.

30 of them have ever deviated the HK men and HK women, and the rate of male and female is 1:1.

Refer to the figure, most interviewees define HK women as a ladies who

  1. Love to show off
  2. Love using brand name
  3. Greedy and Utilitarian
  4. Rude
  5. Arrogant
  6. Love to criticize others
  7. Childish
  8. Self-central

It seems similar to what media present, but not totally match, e.g. Internet claim HK women are princess type. And how does the general public define HK men and Toxic men? Wikja pointed that “toxic men” and “HK men” explored their meaning into form words which for insult others.

Refer to the interview responses, “toxic men” and “HK men” are still different. Toxic men are extreme introvert (autism), ACG fanaticism and lacks of female friends.

HK men are who love to show off, male chauvinist, but rude, weak and stingy, as the mainstream media claimed.

Interviewees touch the information about “HK men” and “HK women” mainly from Web forums, second are from friends, then are from the mass media such as TV, radio broadcasting, magazines and newspaper.

And they have known the labels of “HK men” and “HK women” two to three years.

Most of interviewees believed “HK men” and “HK women” themselves and the netizens are the main factors of the “HK men” and “HK women”.

Most of interviewees are no interested and have no feeling to “HK men” and “HK women”.

Over a half of interviewees think that the media cannot influence their view on “HK men” and “HK women”

And over two third of interviewees claimed that the media presentation about “HK men” and “HK women” only partly meet the reality, but it would damage the image of HK male and HK female. A few interviewees approve that the media presentation can increase the self-improvement of HK male and HK female.

Most of mass media claimed that HK female generally are love-utilitarian and HK male feel inferior to HK female because of increasing education and economic level of female. According to the research, what HK female and HK male mostly want are the respect and concern from partners and the kindness, not materials.

The media suggest that “HK men” and “HK women” is the factors of increasing “HK and Mainland marriage”. In our finding, the general public actually do not mind whether the partner is HK resident.

And this is the sum up of what the interview found.

Labeling perspective

Under the interactionist approach, the HK men and HK women condition would be understood at the micro level such as the interaction between genders and between media and general public under the sharing meaning.

HK men and HK women condition is never a problem until some significant groups made it as an issue through labeling which does not depend on what the labeled have done but how society define them.

In this case, media play an important role and it can be divided into group, one is tradition mass media controlled by intelligentsia, another is Internet in Web 2.0 type dominated by youngsters.

Refer to the social and economic changes and the historical factors we have mentioned before, the general background include two layers.

One is the characteristics more or less youngsters nowadays share on slides.

Another is the increasing rate of late marriage, un-marriage and HK-Mainland marriage.

Tradition mass media mainly concern the factors of late marriage, un-marriage and HK-Mainland marriage. They imagine the cherish values of HK are marriage and family and therefore they attribute the dysfunction of marriage to the quality of HK men and the impossible demand by HK women.

This is why tradition mass media always present the HK men and HK women condition with the issues of late marriage, un-marriage or HK-Mainland marriage. Look at the examples of newspapers and RTHK. Before 2005, mass media claimed that the quality of HK men is too low, inferior and poor, HK women had to not marry or marry the foreigners or mainland good men. After 2005, mass media also attributed the marriage issue to the impossible demand by HK women.

As the labeled target of mass media are general HK male and HK female who haven’t partners, mass media usually use the sensational wordings in general terms and the eye-catching headlines with marriage issues to depict the social conditions.

For example,

Sensational wordings: HK men  “no common sense”, and “死充”. HK women “高竇”, and “要求高”.

Eye-catching headlines: “聰明港女笨港男”, “港女擇偶搵鬼吼”, and “港女有救 北上狂嫁大陸仔

Because the labeled are primary deviance with no punishment, general public would just ignored and go unnoticed.

On the other hand, internet would be interested in the qualities of HK men and HK women rather than marriage issues which harm their idealized moral.

With the widespread of internet and the increasing number of participants, netiziens can express and exchange their feeling about HK male or HK female through forums, YouTube and blogs. Internets users usually blame the bad traits of their friends or particular person by label them HK men and HK women with moral judgment such as $63.8-story and SiSicheung-only-kiss-with lawyer-story.

Because internet can freely exchange the information, the angers and conflicts between two or three couples can be exaggerated into big news between two genders. Some labeled would be a secondary deviance because their privacy and bad images would be public on internet as punishment which may influence their real live.

The labeled and their supporters feel insulted and label the labelers for revenge such as describe the labelers’ particular behaviors, hobbits, speeches and ideas. During HK male and HK female attack and labeled each other on internet, they accept the deviant labels, 小松奈奈is a typical case. In order to reduce the negative meanings from the labeling, the labeled would create categories label each other within groups, for example, 就係你影衰我班港女

As the meaning of label become complex, labels becomes meaningless, but just for insult others.

Account and suggestion

HK men and HK women is a social problem.

However, we believe, without media, especially the widespread of Internet, it would never be described as a social problem from a social condition.

Because of social and economic changes, which contradict to the traditional gender ideology, the conflicts between male and female are common.

Sadly, under the widespread of Internet, the freely criticism and jeers label the HK men and HK women as secondary deviance through exaggerating the particular cases such as “$63.8-story” and “sisicheung-I-only-kiss-with-lawyer-story”.

The integration of mass media and Internet such as the news from web in Apple Daily constructs the HK men and HK women as a social problem.

What the tradition or mainstream mass media concern actually are late marriage, decreasing marriage rate and HK and Mainland marriage.

And the HK men and HK women they describe do not totally match those described on Internet.

Look at the HK men presented by RTHK! Look at the Toxic men the internet presented! Is he a HK men or a HK male in our mind? Whose HK men are they?

The HK men and HK women the mass media describe usually are HK people cannot find their partners. Those described on Internet would have partners, for example, the characters in “$63.8-story” and “Am-I-silly-story”. The HK men and HK women on internet only relay to HK youngsters who have bad traits, thoughts and quality of social skills.

So, some doubts would be possible that some people criticize or label others HK men and HK women because of anger-displacement for their partners. Even full marriage rate between HK peoples occurred, the HK men and HK women cannot be totally reduced.

We suggest that such social condition can ne only reduced through the education in school, family and society, or government policy in economy and technology.

School can provide effective social skills in sex education and train the student to respect other individuals.

Family can to not so spoil the children therefore children not so self-central, and teach them not to value everything materially.

Society can promote healthy gender equality like that in North Europe.

Government can improve ID register on Internet to force users be responsible to their speech. Also government can provide multi-oriented economic development to increase job opportunity and social mobility and decrease the wealth gap so that HK men would not feel so inferior.
