I was so lucky I met a good English teacher when I was in primary. She taught me correct pronunciation of a to z. Much of my English is corrected only because of my self-study instead of being taught at school. In fact some teachers at schools pronounce the letters in a wrong way as well. And students usually don't realise the usefulness of IPA as it won't appear in their exams, plus a lack of interest in English.

When you talk about the pronunciation of /z/, I don't understand why for British pronunciation, you use phonetic symbols /zed/  whereas for American pronunciation , you use  'zee' . If 'e' is a phonetic symbol, it rhymes with 'bed' not /i:/ as in 'see'.

但係聽你讀X,又真係好似S,唔知S同X個音有咩分別呢?

Too bad my PC's sound driver crapped out.  I wish I can get the sound and correct myself too.

btw, what about the idea for a different kind of blog we came up with?

  'Hot' also means sexy. When someone says 'he/she is hot', it means he/she is sexy. You can say you're hot when you feel hot. Meaning is different in different contexts.

yeah, both are correct, or, we can express this in a metaphor - "I feel like I am melting. "

其實有些字或詞是譯不到或譯不好的, 所以我們多了些音譯新字/詞, 統稱 '外來語',

如: 幽默 (humor), 沙展(sergeant),  kowtow (扣頭), guanxi (關係)...

香港中將R讀成"鴉勞"，是因為廣東話缺乏"卷脷"式發音，條脷不太活動自如所以發不到卷脷音。因可能女生天生長舌或有夜間運動習慣，所以不難解釋為何女生英文發音會比男生較好...

和日音及韓音英文比較, 港音英文已算易明, 要改善口音的應該是日韓為先....

日韓音英文有時會將個英文字改作另外一個音,而當地人已完全忘記正音

話說在南韓旅行時我用港式英文講出Coffee, 但服務員完全不懂, 接著我說COPY, 他即時給我一杯咖啡!

I tend to agree with Ellen...

Our government are constantly saving for rainy days.  But like southern California,

it never rains in the SAR, or our CE and his yes-team never feels it even when rain drops

are keep falling on their heads!

A large chunk of the government's budget already spent on education.  The problem is

that money wasn't wisely spent and hence results undesirable.

Problem is with people, the decision makers, both in the government and

the education industry (e.g. school principals)

Mark, the HK government has so much surplus in the safe... it just does not want to spend much on education...  *sigh*

Siu, hehehe... that depends on whether the talented teachers can stand the crazy education system!

If Mark couldn't find it on reference.com, it probably isn't an established idiom.

I guess in that sentence it probably just means talent is not easily observed.

Perhaps we could attract more talents to join the education industry by paying teachers more? :)

That's exactly where the problem is.  The government lacks what it takes to hire and

retain qualified teachers to get the job done.

The government should focus on Training. The test result would not mean anything if there is no proper followup training program.  "ideally", let the teachers to train aboard ... in an english speaking country. that way, they can really learn some Real english and can focus on learning. ( i know teachers nowadays have very heavy workload.. poor them)

I know it's not gonna happen tho! :)

Mrs Law once asked me as a student parent do I support the idea of benchmark tests

for teachers.  I said I do.

Local English teachers are generally weak in spoken English.

They were victims of a vicious circle.  And victims likely victimize more victims!
