Hi,Mr. Siu.I am a new visitor of your blog.After reading your article about how to learn English , i really have a passion and confident to study it hard.In your passage,i strongly agree that reading is the best way to learn English.But i don't know whether i watch some American novel such as Twilight!There was a  lot of unique vocab and i haven't seen it before.Should i learn them all?And i am curious that how to judge the unknown vocab whether they are good or bad to learn?Please give me an advice,Thank you.I am looking foward to seeing your reply~~

不過自從睇完Siu Si呢篇文章，開始想試吓睇，反正有故事聽之餘又學到英文句型、生字，一舉兩得

 

如果我用英文寫日志時,冇英文字典,,怎麽辦?

閱讀果陣的確會有好多問題可以諗到出黎，但係又無人可以比我問......例如點解vote配in，又或者點解一篇文度用"generally"，而唔用"usually"咁.....

When I am reading an article, I always ask similar questions as you mentioned above, just that I don't have the answers. And I can hardly find grammar books that will answer the exact questions in hands. Quoting your questions on that particular news clip, 'as chairman of Sun Hung Kai Properties' without 'the' before chairman, I don;t know where I can find an answer for that. I did ask a native-speaker this kind of questions, he just said that is the way it is. Would you give me some suggestions how I can improve my English or where I can look for answers for this kind of questions? (If you find grammar reference books will help, can you give some recommendations?)

有時睇subtitle..自己其實係識果個英文....但如果冇左subtitle..就發覺好難掌握得到到底係講緊咩.....

有咩方法可以impove???

I was a science student too!  (It's a "was" because I'm a 2008 AL candidate...)
I remember I've come across a website in which the pronunciations of those chemical jargons are shown, but it's been a long time since then, so I am not sure if that site is still there.

But the Yahoo dictionary is quite a good alternative.  Common chemicals like "methyl", "ethanol", and "benzene" can all be found.

I am quite interested in knowing the correct pronunciation in organic chemical compounds. I don't know whether you are a science student in secondary or not but have you come across know such as penta-1,4-diene, methyl benzoate or even "5,5,5-trichloro-3,3-dimethylpentanenitrile"? I know that the pronunciation of these 'monsters' may not be important in studying science but I am just curious about their pronunciation since I couldn't find much concerning this from the internet

用了article也不是錯, 但意思就不一樣了…

以 We’ll go by train 為例, 這裡說的是「我們會乘搭火車（交通工具,, 或者說任何一架火車）去某地方」

如果加了 the, We’ll go by THE train, 就會變成「我們會乘搭那架火車去某地方」

 

發 v音是要咬下唇的(和發 f音的口型一樣,不過發 v 音要聲帶震動同埋噴少D氣)

 

I love my cat more now than before 沒問題

Sir siu,

"Time" is a very popular magazine, from which you can learn contemporary English as well as international affairs.  But I suspect how many Hongkongers can fully understand the content without frequently refering to a dictionary. We have learnt English for more than 10 years or even 20 years, but still struggle to read a popular English magazine.  What's wrong with our English language education?

蕭sir，第一次看你的網誌，多多指教。

你說得很對，學英文真的不可以怕難、怕深。想想自己已學了十多廿年英文，如今還是半調子一個。虧中學時代還有優越的學習條件，可以跟來自英澳等外籍老師學習，就是因為懶散怕麻煩，Oral又怕發音不正及措詞不當，結果白白浪費了如此學習良機，現在好後悔！

Besides, could u please spend some time on teaching us phrases. like when i watch films and series, i dnt understand some of the slangs or words that i cant find in dictionaries ( sometimes i can find the word but not the word with this preposition).It will be really helpful if u do!!! thks a lot =)

但係我聽到好多(外國)人都將個th音讀到好似d音咁..
唔係為左emphasis 個字都真係聽唔到佢地 "TH"
唔震果D (eg : thing)  仲似(d音)      救命 ~

to 捉蟲:

student 可以讀作 “s- chew - dent” 或者 “s – ti - 烏 - dent”

 

phenolphthalein 的 phth 沒甚麼特別, 就是和 fifth 的 fth 一樣 (一個f音再接著一個unvoiced的th音)

 

應該好少懶th音的吧…我反而在想可不可以”懶” 掉 nol 的 l 音 (翹舌很辛苦..hehe)

我經常覺得要讀th音很煩
由其是要讀一大堆有th音的字連著的句子或其他consonants
1國人讀th音會不會因此有懶音呢?

大約知係咩黎, 但自己又唔太sure點用所以唔會去用佢.
同埋又唔知會唔會夾埋其他字一齊之後變左phrase, 會用錯.
