I enjoy your talk and I think you sound quite native.
I appreciate your way of teaching so much.
But I think the most effective way to learn, is to speak to foreigners.

Siu Sir, 多謝你的分享, 你個blog 真係好有幫助呀!!!

I agree with you Siu Sir that Legislator Miss Eu speaks the most fluent English among these 3 people. And I admire her intonation and speed. That's what I long for in speaking English.
Since I discovered your blog, I have watched most of the videos teaching us on pronunciation and correction of Chinglish. In Hong Kong rarely do we have chances to get exposure under environment of native English speakers. It's really difficult for us to speak like a foreigner. But everytime I watch your video clip, I imitate your intonation and pronunciation. I cannot say I improve a lot, but at least I speak a little bit better than before.
Thank you Siu Sir and many students are learning from you : ]
THANKSSSSSSSS!!!!

其實香港有好多人連a-z都讀唔岩
e變醫,h變egg柱,r變ar low等等好多好多
不如開番一個專教a-z既片段...
(個人見意,可以不加理會)

謝謝大家的意見。
其實不用 Youtube 是有原因的。Youtube 有片長限制,過十分鐘的影片都無法上載。這套「長片」有足足十七分鐘,唯有不用 Youtube 了。下次再試試 Google Video。

Jojo,
Past is an adjective. Passed is the past participle, when used in passive action, can function as an adjective. When pronouncing "carefully", remember the vowel of "ful" is the schwa, so don't say "foe", as most HKers do.

Si sir,
I want to ask about the difference between past and passed. And I would also like to ask about the pronounceation of the word 'carefully'

Snow: If Eu was educated locally, she didn't learn her pronunciation from any local schools. She either attended international or she learned it from home. I also didn't hear that "heavy T" from Git's "th" as you did.
Siu: The /z/ sound in <s>, especially following a weak and preceding a stressed vowel, is not that big a deal. A respected ESL prof once told me that the best indication of a native speaker speaking English in a casual environment is that there're little pronunciation errors throughout; if every single sound uttered is perfect, then that's the ultimate proof that the speaker is speaking English as a well-learned, well-polished, and well-practised second language. So if you talk to your barber the way Tony Blair addresses parliament, you're speaking ESL.

Thanks for your clips comparing the English accents of different HK politicians. Am glad you also identified Audrey's oral English as the best of the bunch. Her cut-glass British accent is most admirable, and far more proper than To Git's, even though she was educated locally (which goes to show that a proper English education in HK wasn't a myth!). Despite his BBC experience, To Git's "th" sounds are still atrocious! I cringed when I heard him say "think" with a heavy T sound instead of a proper "th" like Audrey does. Am surprised you didn't point this out in your analysis, but rather picked on his pronunciation of "lives" and "saved" - words which didn't sound too bad at all to my ear.

Mr. Siu,
I closed my eyes to listen to the clip, only Ms. Eu gave me an impression of the native English-speaker. St. Francis Canossian College, St. Paul's Co-educational College and HKU, I admire her that she wasn't studying abroad at her early education, but locally.
It's an example to prove that you can speak English as well as to the native speaker level even you are studying in Hong Kong.
It is a really good lesson, thank you for the exquisite comment. I think I'm going to read through the blog entirely.
About the comparison between YouTube and Yahoo! Video, will you please to upload this clip again to YouTube also? So, perhaps we can give you a fairer comment.

I think 陶傑's intonation is the best, n Im expecting that Siu Sir can speak an utterance for us^^
dv_vb 2007-10-05 02:50
今次條片錄音細聲左, 應該話阿sir電腦speaker夠大聲, 但係自己講野把聲細聲左好多
要扭到個speaker好大聲先聽到, 而播三位人物講野就更大聲=.=希望阿sir注意現場收音
Ruby 2007-10-05 01:36
I think youtube is better, because the volume of this clip is rather lower, and the video is not playing smoothly (or you can say it lag) if I scroll up and down the page.
賓 2007-10-05 01:34
我覺得陶傑最勁,佢講英文講得好自然!
其實不同的人都有他不同的口音和表達語言方式,要分高下真的好難分。
我個人講得除左意思要對和文法正確之外,就要看誰說得自然!
