熱心的網友A傳來這個廣告標語:Not Every BlackBerry is Created Equal(註)

她問:既然 create 是動詞,為甚麼不用副詞 equally 而用形容詞 equal?

其實 equal 所形容的是名詞 Blackberry,而非動詞 create。這結構稱為賓語補充(object complement):先寫及物動詞(transitive verb)和賓語(object),再於後面加上賓語的補充資料(complement)。好了,不再說術語,大家看例子吧。

這樣明白了吧? Not Every BlackBerry is Created Equal 一句結構相同,只是以被動式寫出。為了讓大家參考,我把上面的例句高等法院裁定這法例違憲同樣改寫成被動式:The legislation was declared unconstitutional。結構一模一樣。

同樣用法的動詞:call, consider, create, declare, deem, drive, find, get, keep, leave, like, make, prefer, pronounce, render, send, think, turn, want (input welcomed)

(註):Not Every BlackBerry is Created Equal 這句是有典故的。美國獨立宣言第二段第一句寫道:"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal..."。意思是人人平等。頭腦靈活的生意人把經典名言字眼一改,就成為有創意有趣味的標語:BlackBerry部部不同

其實這些動詞是factitive ditransitive verb,通常後面是direct object和object complement,中間可插入"to be"去還原其關係,而這個object complement 通常是adjective或adjective phrase,也可以是noun或noun phrase.

只是例句的direct object (All men) 經過passivization前置為句子subject,句末的object complement (equal) 保留不變。

All men are created equal = All men are created to be equal.

    類似的例子還有,只是object complement是個noun phrase。

She was elected a class representative = She was elected to be a class representative.

    兩段我都睇過然後先問
    我明白dark l 和 clear l 既分別
    但ble, ple 既字尾都讀到好似
    加左個home,low中既vowel係P和L(打唔倒國際音標)
    但查字典卻冇vowel
    我表達得唔係好清楚
    如果你明的話 可唔可以解一解呢 唔該哂

    Re: Coolbe

What you write in passive voice is grammatically okay, I think. But the difference is WHAT YOU EMPHASIZE ON.

    1. The book which is really boring is found by me. (Emphasizing on WHO FOUND the boring book)
    2. The book is found [ by me ] really boring. (Emphasizing on the BOREDOM of the book)

In fact, sometimes who takes the action in a sentence is not necessarily mentioned. That's why when you rewrite active voice into passive voice, the doer can sometimes be ignored. e.g. 100 soldiers were killed in the battle. (It is understood that the enemies killed them. The emphasis is the SOLDIERS' ENDING.)

e.g. The student was punished by his math teacher. (Not Chinese teacher, English teacher, etc.)~ Can you get it, Coolbe?

Siu sir: 早在二個月前抄了英文字典句子默寫  跟你這課字equal雖然默寫數百遍  但不識讀equality treated

(1)All three children have equality in our family. they are all treated in the same way

(2)All people should be treated as equals by the law

(3)Ther are both equalls good at reading.

I find the book [ which is ] really boring

如果我用passive voice 改寫, relative cause 不是應該緊住 the book ,
s.t : The book which is really boring is found by me.

點解會變左係 : The book is found [ by me ] really boring

    有同學想我把幾句例句譯成中文,好吧,如他所願。

    1. I find the book really boring.

    這本書真悶人。

    2. My boss wants it done by Christmas.

    老闆要我在聖誕前把它做妥。

    3. Her incessant whining drives me crazy.

We don't normally use the alphabet //  in broad phonetic transcription for English. But when it does appear it represents the same sound as /e/.

    看到你這篇, 令我想起以前不知道哪裡聽過的:
verb 後面用 adj 是形容 subject 完成動作後的狀態,
所以我一直覺得安全抵達是 arrive safe 而不是 arrive safely...
    其實究竟我有沒有學錯? (可能我記錯?)
    請 siu sir 指教指教.

Arrive safe 還是 arrive safely 就要看說話的人心中想以 safe 形容 arrive 的人還是 arrive 的動作了。

    這樣說吧。

Arrive safe 就是 Arrive in a way that you are safe.

Arrive safely 就是 Arrive in a safe manner.

    這純是胡扯,不必考究。

    thanks ar!
其實平時識用 drive me crazy, get it right, make the foundation sound ...但一轉左 passive 就搞唔清...
不過我最想知 "i see beautiful"...知道一定唔係"beautifully", 但點解會係 "beautiful" 而唔係 "beauty" or "beautiful + noun"?

    btw, 前幾日《信報》有提你個blog入圍 「全球華文部落格大獎」呢~

    真的嗎? 我也想看看報導呢。

    至於 "I see beautiful" 一句,對唔住,無得解。就是廣告人故意不理常規的用字,講求的是創意而非文法。
