I discovered a big discovery today.

I just discovered that we can actually google a certain address and then we can zoom, we can turn or whatever and then the house, the building or the street that you search for will be right in front of your eyes.

This afternoon, I tried it and googled my own address, as I zoomed, moved backwards, forwards or made U turns, my own house and each and every house on this block was right there in front of my eyes.   In the picture of the front of a neighbor's house, I even saw my neighbor right there holding a hose watering her front lawn!!

I always thought that we could only get bird's-eye views from the satellite.  But, those are not only bird's-eye views, they are exact pictures taken right in front of your house by the satellite.  How can they do that?  I mean, taking pictures this way when the satellite is all the way up there.  Technology is really scary.

That means, what we see in movies or TV is real and actually is going on around us daily.  You know, they use satellite to track people down and follow them around, when the time is right, they would say .......... go, go, go, get them, get those bad guys!!

It indeed is.  Did you try to search?  You can actually move around like you're walking up and down that block.  Scary.

    Forget me not 2008-07-22 22:46

There is no more privacy in this world nowadays.  I once searched my name in Yahoo and Google just for fun, I happened to read an article I wrote for an organization one year ago.  Really, the internet world is powerful but also very scary!!!

I tried googling myself too, quite some info returned.  I saw my work phone no. and related info from the online directory of my workplace, then, from public search info, I saw our home phone no. and address, further more, from the property record ....... all the previous owners of this property, when did we buy this property, how much mortgage we took out, actual copies of the deed and mortgage documents that we signed.  If the mortgage has been paid off, when it was paid off.  If you have a second mortgage, info about the second mortgage................ no privacy at all.

Honestly, I didn't discover it myself.

My daughter told me, then I started exploring and using this Google map search.  But still, to me, it's a big discovery.

No wonder.  Thank you for the info.

Those street views are not only pictures, you can move along, back and forth or turn at different angles to see what you want to see.  Amazing.  But then, like what's indicated in the article, there's a privacy issue.

Somehow it is quite scary...  Everyone can see what you are doing...

    Thoughts2008-07-22 11:28

I believe the pictures are only taken periodically, not instant ones.  As the pictures of the street views that I see today are the same ones that I saw yesterday.  Anyway, I only saw one person, my neighbor, in one of those views of the whole block.  Nobody else was outdoors when those pictures were taken.

But then again, whoever happen to be outdoors when the pictures are taken, they'll be in them.

But then again, whenever you're in the open or even driving, especially in commercial areas, you have to be prepared that you're being taped by countless surveillance cameras.

I know Googles map was powerful but did not know that it could do that much! I wonder, since this is a free service, why they put so much on it and where do they their revenue for this, or whehter it is worth it considering the negative comments it receives.
    檢舉

    Thoughts2008-07-22 10:55

I believe the revenues are mainly from advertising.  Let's google to find out.

I have developed a habit of using Google instead of MSN or Yahoo when it comes to searching as like you said, I think it's powerful too.

Some two to three years ago, I googled my residence in Hong Kong, and I also got a bird's eye view of it. Kinda scary!  We could now be under the radar round the clock. Sigh...

    Thoughts2008-07-22 10:42

Now, on top of bird's eye views, you may see street views exactly like you're walking up and down the street and looking at each and every house, their front yards, their cars in the driveway ...... and my neighbor watering her lawn!

If I happen to be there when they take pictures periodically, I would even be in the views!!

Yeah, no more privacy. The Government can track us down like tracking down Jason Bourne in the movies. But so long as we are staying low as ordinary small potatoes, we'll be okay !

    Thoughts2008-07-22 10:02

I can be easily tracked down.  They may as well follow the activities of my credit card ......... you know, she's now in a gas station ...... she's now in Rite Aid ....... she's now in Macy's ...........

Hey, even though we're ordinary good citizens, have you seen those movies or good ordinary people like us being framed and got into big trouble like hell??  I can't watch those movies.  They suffocate me.

It is so scary. It also means that if one post a picture on the internet, people can find out where you are, where the picutre was taken.   So do not post a picture of your house on your blog.

    Thoughts2008-07-22 09:58

First of all, posting things online is actually letting the whole world to see.  Anything that you posted can lead back to you and reveal your identity.  Pictures, of course, reveal even more.

    Thoughts2008-07-22 09:55

You mean, those street views are not taken from the satellite?  Someone told me that those advanced lenses can pretty much do anything from the satellite.  Not sure though.

It indeed has a privacy issue.  I could clearly see our cars parked in our driveway!!  I tried to zoom and see if I could read the license plates.  Thank God, couldn't read them.

It is truly scary. Does it mean that they can track Where I am and what I am doing?

I can't imagine how terrible it would be if so.

    Thoughts2008-07-22 09:52

If they want to track you down, there's nothing that can stop them.  Just too many ways and devices.

You know what?  They may probably track you down just simply by tracking your cell phone, I suppose.

There's also one way to track down a person, that is, his or her credit card activities.  As you go along, they know where you are.

Oh this sounds a bit too scary to me, I also thought they could only take 3D pics or make 3D maps, I didn't know they could eventually show us pics taken 1 min before.

Seriously this freaked me out a little bit though

    Thoughts2008-07-22 09:49

The pictures, I believe, are not instant views.  Maybe pictures are taken periodically.

You may also try searching for HK addresses.  I tried typing in HK addresses, it gave me bird's-eye views from the satellite.  You may zoom closer and closer, it's just that it was not able to give me such close-up street views like those over here.  Go ahead and try.  Go to Google.com and click on map........

Do you know what and how?  I have no clue about things like this.

When I search at Google.com and click on "map", it has several options including "satellite" and I believe the maps and bird's-eye views are from the satellite.  The street views?  I really don't know.
