besides getting rid of parasites by Lugol's enema, we have to get enough iodine in order that our body can function properly. Which part of the body needs iodine? Yes, it's our thyroid gland. Infact, all cells in our body need iodine in order to perform their task as good as it should. the organs that contain iodine in big ratio are: thyroid gland (iodide), breast, uterus, prostate gland (these organs need iodine). different organs need different form of iodine, so.. a good iodine supplement should contain both 'iodine' and 'iodide'. also, it should be non-radioactive, inorganic iodine supplement. you cannot consume the kind of iodine that you use for disinfection when you are injured.
If you wanna know more about iodine, please check it up in the internet and look for those articles written by Dr David Brownstein. He has written a number of books on Iodine and one of which that i bought is:
Iodine: why you need it, why you can't live without it!
iodine can help in prevent of breast cancer, fibrocystic breast cancer, improve immune system, prostate cancer, chronic fatigue symdrome.... etc...
men need compartively less iodine than women because they don't have breasts. the bigger breast you have, the more iodine you need. according to the information i read, if Anita Mui knew these information earlier, maybe she is still alive and kicking right now!
of course, no single vitamin or mineral can work alone! we need to have all vitamins in good ratio to work synergistically to help the body to perform its' task. but, iodine do work with magnesium hand in hand in an important way, and selenium is also important when using iodine (when you take more selenium, you have to get more vitamin e too because they would deplete each other if you are taking either one of them more than the other in terms of ratio).
iodine is an oxidant as well as an anti-oxidant. they will change themselves by switching themselves according to different situation or environment in the body. so, you just don't know when it plays the part as an oxidant and when is it an anti-oxidant. to avoid problem, we usually take iodine 2 hours away from any kind of anti-oxidant to avoid the turning of iodine to iodide. i.e. if you take an iodine supplement with iodine and iodide, and you also take, say, vitamin c (a strong anti-oxidant), the iodine in this supplement will change to iodide. as mentioned above, our body needs both forms, iodine and iodide for different parts of our body. our thyroid needs iodide and the rest of the body needs iodine. so, to place safe, just take them 2 hours apart! e.g. of anti-oxidant is vitamin A, C, E, alpha lipoic acid, CQ10.. there are alot!
although selenium is iodine's good partner in performing specific function, you just can't take them together, also 2 hours apart. yes, it's troublesome to be healthy... you won't bother to take this or that when you are young and healthy. but... when you age, when more toxins accumulate in your body, we must find ways to reverse the situation and to get back to health.
a healthy thyroid gland is very very important because it controls the hormonal function of the whole body. it helps in PMS, menopause, andropause..... lots and lots! if you are interested in this topic, go and search for more info. in the internet!
