A Time For Us” marks Joey’s 10th year in the industry.  Although some people seem to prefer the 2nd edition cover, I like this 1st edition one better.  I think most of her cover photos are quite well taken, at least for those that I have.

After the stronger concepts in her previous two albums “Glow” and “In Motion”, the making of “A Time For Us”, as Joey herself commented on, started off without much of a direction.  Indeed, for those who were expecting more interesting ideas, it may be slightly disappointing to find the first plug and opening song “可歌可泣” to be a pleasant, nice and very safe, ‘main-road’ ballad.  The next song “我所知的兩三事” is a typical dance track but is very likeable with its catchy chorus (‘Shake!’) and infectious beats.

T
he next plug “搜神記” is a slightly 中國風 ballad composed by Christopher Chak, whom I think has written similar tracks for Kay Tse before.  I don’t usually like 中國風 but Chak seems to have a knack for writing tunes that stick in your head and you will grow to like with each listen.  I particularly like the bridge part.  It seems to be a very difficult song to pitch, with the notes meandering relentlessly up and down the scales.  Someone with a little less vocal prowess will probably find themselves running out of breath after negotiating the barrage of notes following one another so closely, and likely out of tune when having to drop down to the low notes immediately after hitting the high ones with a falsetto in the last chorus.  It is quite impressive to listen to Joey’s live rendition of the song.

It Doesn’t Matter” and “開動快樂” are both very obviously ‘西洋’ and it sounds a bit weird to fit in Cantonese lyrics, but I like Joey’s attempts.  She sounds quite different from the way she sings ballads or dance tracks.  Some singers tend to use one style of singing voice, handling most types of songs in a similar manner so I respect Joey for trying different vocal styles, even though this particular type doesn’t seem to be her forte, not yet anyway.  I don’t think she has tackled anything similar to “It Doesn’t Matter” before and the result here is quite encouraging.

On the other hand, she seems much more comfortable with “花城”, a bossa nova style that she is quite good at (though not my cup of tea).  She also carries pretty well “心賊難防”, which I thought was a slightly Faye Wong-ish type of song.  圓謊” is a typical ballad (but nice anyway) that she should normally have no problems with except that she said that as a very straightforward person, she found it hard to ‘get into’ the song because it is about the protagonist lying about her past in order to safeguard her present relationship.  I like the soft, ‘hollow’ (not sure how to describe) sounds of the guitar, the kind of fill-ins that I have difficulty with.  Wonder if I’d be able to master them?

And finally we get to the last two songs “時不與我” and “兩面”, my favourites in the album.  This is the first time that the songs I like best are not from the plugged list but parked less conspicuously at the end of the album.  I like that she is expanding more into the lower registers of her vocals in these two songs instead of only trying to scale up one height after another.  Together with “圓謊”, “時不與我” will probably also be discounted by some as just another k-ballad, but I like it for its intense arrangement, rich instrumentation and vocal performance.  It starts softly with just the piano and starts to build up when you get into the chorus.  I like the strings coming into the break and the song builds up some more, culminating in the final chorus.  Anyway, why should people care so much about whether songs are so-called ‘k’ or not? 好聽最重要。

The album closes with “兩面”, which talks about the two sides to her character.  In a way, it seems a bit of a follow-up to “28個我”, the last track of “In Motion”, which is about the many sides of her albeit in a more fun and cheeky manner.  兩面” sounds a lot darker, but the chorus brightens up and is in fact rather optimistic.  It is a nice first published song by new goomusic writer 謝曉盈.

So in the end, the album turned out pretty well.  Despite previous talk that the album is more ‘commercial’ and has less ‘character’ than the last two, the worries were unfounded.  I’ve been listening to it for much of the past few weeks, and liking it very much.  The minor glitch is the absence of Wyman’s lyrics this time.  Well, hopefully next time.

Yeah I actually started listening to (this) Joey way back in 2002 but gradually began to like her a lot more only from around 2005/06 onwards, when I thought that her albums started showing a bit more 'character'.
